A short note today because I am dealing with crippling anxiety and FOMO induced by the south swell run of the decade. I’m hard pressed to find a social media feed, news outlet or text thread that isn’t ranting, raving, complaining or thrilling over the past 48 hours of waves. Been pumping! But the reason I have FOMO and not a surf story is simple: I didn’t surf.

When my girls left for the East Coast this past weekend — a week ahead of me — I prepared for Surfapalooza. I went straight to the beach and into fun south swell. The prequel to yesterday and today’s main event.

I surfed three days straight, multiple-hour sessions, combined with some intense yard work, a few kettlebell swings and 12,000 steps a day — I stayed busy. I woke up Tuesday destroyed. Sore, achy and uncertain of my ability to walk outside. I had surfed myself into oblivion before the swell event. Whoops! I was as buckled as my favorite board. I assumed the fetal position.

My neck still hurts, my shoulders are tweaked and I can’t see another clip filmed poorly on an iPhone of the Wedge or Newport. It all makes me want to be alone. But Surfapalooza part 2 starts tomorrow.

In my time at home, hiding under a weighted blanket, there have been some interesting things to watch outside of hockey and basketball. Here are a few of my favorites:

Interpol announced their upcoming new record This Mirror Weighs A Ton will come out August 28 on Partisan Records and they released two great new songs from it. It’s no secret I’m a life-long Interpol obsessive. Read our interview with lead singer Paul Banks here.
